Collagen Will 100% Save Your Skin!

Collagen Will 100% Save Your Skin! 1

I could list 100 +++ articles about collagen and that your skin needs it BUT this isn’t my intention in this blog post. The purpose of this post is to tell you how collagen works and ways in which you can boost your collagen levels. You can find out more about collagen in this link.

WHAT IS COLLAGEN?

Collagen is crucial to supple skin. The wrinkle-preventing protein that naturally occurs in our bodies keeps skin plump and youthful. It is responsible for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, it’s the skin’s structural net, which makes it resilient, strong and elastic. The BAD news is that collagen depletes after the age of 20. Yep, TWENTY.

Collagen is made by fibroblasts (types of cells) which as you can see also become depleted the older we get.

Collagen is comprised of 4 amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine. When the collagen protein is digested, these are the individual elements left over for uptake. But in order to produce collagen within the body, we need to have good levels of glycine, proline and lysine, along with a decent amount of vitamin C as a cofactor. Sorry for all the Science bits essentially I need you to know that Vitamin C is important for collagen production! Shew….not so bad right?

In a nutshell collagen can do the following for your skin:

  • reduces wrinkles
  • prevents the formation of wrinkles (it is never too early to start)
  • Improves the elasticity of your skin
  • helps with water retention so prevents dehydration
  • assists with firmness
  • makes skin healthy and dewy

I get quite a few questions about the concentration of collagen which should/ could be used on ones skin.

6 EASY WAYS TO BOOST COLLAGEN

1. FACIAL MASSAGE

Massage can stimulate collagen production and strengthen muscle memory (hello contours!). Include upwards massage movements into your daily routine when applying products – which will increase blood circulation and collagen production.

2. COLLAGEN CREAMS

Applying topical collagen is easier said than done. The collagen molecule itself can’t actually penetrate the skin; it just sits on the surface. Therefore you need to choose a product with collagen amino acids that are small enough to get into the deeper layers of the dermis to deliver that plumping effect you associate with collagen. And thankfully AA Cosmetics knows exactly how this is done – right? I live for this range – we are currently out of stock but it will be back this week.

3. KNOW WHICH FOODS TO EAT

Eat beans, cabbage and garlic. These foods are rich in sulphur which aids the forming of collagen and maintains the skin’s natural healthy pigmentation. Vitamin C, as discussed above, also supports the process of collagen formation and works to reduce oxidative damage, so also enjoy foods like broccoli, spinach, goji berries and kiwi fruits.

4. KNOW WHAT TO AVOID

This is what all the articles I have read about what we need to avoid as it depletes our collagen production even more – and therefore also increases our aging:

Any guesses?

  • Smoking
  • Sun and
  • Sugar

5. KEEP SKIN HYDRATED

If your skin is hydrated it boosts collagen production. This is the easiest and most efficient way to boost collagen so remember to make sure your skincare products contain Hyaluronic Acid to retain that water!!!

6. TRY A SUPPLEMENT

I know there are quite a few collagen supplements on the market these days – I haven’t tried any. The word on Google is that none of them have actually been FDA approved yet – if you have tried anything please do let me know.
